Changing the look of your home has never been easier, especially if you know how to carry out some simple roof replacement and installation work.

For several reasons, many people now prefer roll roofing over the traditional roofing shingles. Roll roofing material has gained so much in popularity among homeowners in New York. This roofing material is very affordable. It is also easy to install. Although you can’t count on it to last like the flat roofing or even the metal roofing, be it as it may, it can serve you for a reasonable time frame. If you’re so interested in knowing how it is installed, you’re on the right track.

What You Have To Understand About Roll Roofing

Before you go about installing your rolled roofing, you have to make sure that the temperature is feasible enough. It is best to install this roof during warm weather.

Roll roofing comes in diverse colors that can complement both the existing roofing and the entire structure. It’s also available in different types and brands. The type or brand will significantly influence how you’ll install this roofing. It could be attached with peel-and-stick adhesive backing, or nailed down. Whichever method you’d be using, just know that you can make a killing. To get started with how to install it, here are some necessary tools that you have to pick first.

Tools/Materials For Roll Roofing Installation

  • Roll Roofing
  • Ladder
  • Roofing nails
  • Roofing cement
  • Measuring tape
  • Roofing felt or primer
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver
  • Chalk line
  • Broom
  • Flat pry bar

Step By Step Guide To Installing A Roll Roofing

  1. Measure Your Roof

First things first, take appropriate measurements of your roof. Using a long measuring tape, measure the length and the width of the roof and multiply them to get the area of your roof. If your roof is sectionalized, measure a section at a time. Multiply the length and width to get the area of each section, then sum the area sections to get the total area of your roof.

  1. Purchase Your Rolled Roofing

Now using your measurements, get your rolled roofing from your local dealer or manufacturer. Always get enough rolled roofing that can cover your roof. Also, get extra material to make up for overhangs and overlap.

  1. Prepare The Roof

Before you install anything, you need to prepare the roof. How do you prepare your roof? Simply by getting it cleaned. You need to clean the roof and get rid of any dirt, debris, or any substance. Make sure you check the sheathing for any loose or projecting nails and screws.

All nails and screws must be below the sheathing surface. If there’s loose nails or screws, completely get rid of them or put them in their right place.

You can use a brush, broom, or leaf blower to clean up your roof. Most of these unwanted substances, including stones and twigs, can damage the covering, leading to tears and cracks. While getting rid of these substances, be careful to apply all the necessary safety precautions.

To make the process a smooth one for you, spread out all your materials on the floor. Assess all your tools before delving into the installation.

  1. Install Underlay

Although not entirely compulsory, it is recommended that you install underlay. Underlay provides an extra layer of protection. Before attaching your underlay, make sure that the surface of your underlayment is straight and plain. Cut a strip of underlayment, place it under the roof, and attach it using nails.

  1. Draft The Layer

From the bottom edge of the roof sheathing, measure and mark 15 inches in several spots using the chalk.

  1. Apply Roofing Cement

Using a trowel, administer the roofing cement along the edges of your roof. Apply the cement to about 1⁄8-1⁄4 inch thick.

  1. Cut The Rolled Roofing

After applying the roofing cement, roll out the roofing, and cut it to the right size using a knife. Cut it so that it can reach each chalk line, and ultimately covering the entire length of the roof when you lay it down. When cutting, allow an overhang of one inch on the eaves.

  1. Place The First Layer

Place the first layer of the rolled roofing in such a way that it will cover the roof, down to the chalk line. Make sure that you stretch the layer to avoid lapping and wrinkles.

  1. Nail The Roof

Using your hammer, secure the rolled roofing by driving nails into it. Ensure that no nail is sticking out. The recommended nail size for this is a 1-inch roofing nail.

  1. Map Out Another Layer

Using your tape and chalk, measure and mark out 32 inches above the first layer.

  1. Apply A Roofing Cement And Place A Second Layer

Spread the roofing cement across the roof before placing the second layer. Carefully place the first 6 inches of the second layer over the previous layer.

  1. Nail The Roof

After applying a roofing cement and placing the second layer, nail the roof while ensuring that it stays flat and even. Also, while nailing, nail the first and second layers together.

  1. Cover The Nails With Cement

Apply the cement all over the layers to cover the nails.

  1. Trim And Seal The Edges

Once you’re done with the installation, you should use the utility knife to trim away any excess rolled roofing or overhang. Use some cement to seal the edges.

  1. Clean Up Your Roofing

Before you declare the job a success, take your time and clean up the roof. Get rid of any lingering dirt or material.

Although these steps may sound easy, many risks come with attempting to install a roll roofing by yourself. To avoid any accidents or uncomfortable situations, enlist the services of a professional roofing contractor.
